Finding Ancestors in Google Books
Here's a technique that can produce some results. The sucess rate is low, but not extremely so.
Google has scanned and OCR's (turned a picture into the corresponding , searchable text) and mad availale millions of books. many of these are old, (out of coyyright) books.
If you go to books. google.com and search for your keywords, you may find something valuable.
Finding People
Finding People is an art. The most important thing you can do when looking for a person, is to know something, anything about them.
It could be a hobby, a profession, a place where they lived... anything.
This additional piece of information will GREATLY reduce your searching matches and make things significantly easier.
Using two advanced features of Google search you will enter the following search term:
+"first last" +"unique thing"
Example: +"bart simpson" +"skateboarding"
This search term says that the two phrases must be in the results and the phrases must be matched exactly.
Expanding on your search, you should try alternate spellings of the first and last name, short or nick names.
Hopefully, the list of matches will at minimum, move your towards your final goal of finding someone.
Finding People - Property Records
If you are seeking someone who has owned real-estate, you may find some information searching property records.
Property and tax records are public information. Some local governments have made the records searchable on the web. If you know what town or county where someone lives, hit the web to discover if the county has made their property and Tax records available.
The searching capability is often crude and the data is usually dirty, so lots of searches may be in hand, but if you succeed, you will end up with an address of the person you seek.

Finding People... the last step
If you are looking for someone, Zabasearch will find matches on name for people in the USA. It often will find many matches of recent and past addresses and phone numbers pulling together a bit of a history for you.
The results you get will be dense and you will need to do some manual searching, but you should have a fairly high success rate
